ThunderLux was founded in late 2013, when Thomas Yearsley (bass, The Paladins, owner/engineer of Thunderbird Analog Recording Studio) and Laura Jane Willcock (singer-songwriter, The Tighten Ups) were falling madly in love. Laura Jane asked long-time friend & drummer Emily O’Bannon-Robles (RunHoney) to join. She said YES! Thomas then suggested that his veteran session musician Leo Dombecki (keys, sax, guitar, Grammy winning album with Ike Turner, also Ravi Shankar, Sugar Ray Rayford) be asked to join in the fun, because of his massive multi-instrumental talent, AND because he shared Laura Jane’s Northern Michigan roots. Very soon, the love-birds started churning out songs for the group, with Wednesday afternoons solely reserved for rehearsing and recording with ThunderLux at the studio in Oceanside. Hugging became very important to the band, and love, laughter and respect flowed freely, as the four shared in the joy of creation! There were a few live shows in San Diego, and things were looking up for our friends in ThunderLux, as recording continued and the arrangements were fully realized. Then, the unthinkable happened. At 41 years old, while on tour in Colorado, Leo suffered a stroke in his hotel room. In tragic times, nobody gets it together for a fellow player, than the community of musicians in California. Fund-raisers were held, and in San Diego, all of us who love Leo, organized our team, who helped in in every way of his care & recovery. ThunderLux continued the Wednesday afternoon sessions, with wonderous rehabilitating effects for Leo and the entire group. We were just starting to be able to play live again, when tragedy struck again. Emily fell and shredded her knee, placing the band temporarily out of commission. When she had recovered, there was one final show, before Leo announced his plan to move to Washington State in the summer of 2016. The end of ThunderLux felt too painful to even finish the album, and it lay abandoned on an external hard drive in the vault. When the global Covid-19 health crisis of 2020 shut down the studio, shut down The Paladins & shut down The Tighten Ups, Thomas & Laura Jane needed a musical project to love and nurture. The 13 ThunderLux songs were right there, ready for development, mixing and mastering, with a little extra tracking to flesh out a few songs. Revisiting the first blush of love’s creation got them through some very fraught times, and gave happy purpose to complete (& distressing) unemployment. ThunderLux is reborn & we can’t wait for you all to meet us for a (virtual) hug~!
